Two male deities in the suite of Chamunda or Bhairava Pink sandstone, Central India, 10th-11th century Carved in high relief, the two figures stand one behind the other, slightly offset, their bodies resting on their right leg in the characteristic Indian tribhanga position. They are richly adorned with tiaras, necklaces, earrings, belts with pendants and dhotis with wet pleats. Their arms are missing, but their left hands still present are brandishing, the first a trident and the second a khatvanga, attributes common to the goddess Chamunda and the god Bhairava. These two charming deities are not identifiable, but once accompanied the Hindu gods Chamunda or Bhairava, on a stele now disappeared. The naturalistic treatment of the bodies and the sensitivity of the expressions of the faces (elements rather rare in the medieval period where ornamentation and stylization prevail) make this a relief of beautiful quality.
