Maurice Charpentier-Mio (1881-1976) Scheherazade Terracotta bas-relief Signed "Maurice Charpentier-Mio", monogrammed and titled "Schéhérazade Bears the inscription "original sketch" and the trace of a stamp Bears the numbers "58" and "9" and a label on the reverse "Essai de grés (Pâte de couleurs) à la Manufacture de Sèvres par l'auteur 1932 / D'après ses croquis dansés sur " Schéhérazade " (Châtelet 1910) " 17,8 x 19,8 cm Provenance : Sale "Atelier Maurice Charpentier-Mio (1881-1976)" by masters Henry Martin and François Branger, 13 March 1985, Angers, lot 112 The famous Russian ballet Scheherazade was created by the choreographer Michel Fokine and presented at the Paris Opera in 1910. It was after a performance at the Théâtre du Châtelet in 1910 that Maurice Charpentier-Mio created this bas-relief. The sculptor multiplies the planes: in the center of the composition in strong projection one recognizes Zobeide and her kneeling lover, then in very small projection the figurants and finally the slightly incised decor in the background. The use of polychromy reinforces the dynamism of the scene and the hierarchy of the characters represented. Two bronze plaques of the same subject "Sketch of Danced Gestures: Karsavina and Nijinsky in Scheherazade" and "Sketch of Danced Gestures: Scheherazade" of 1913 are kept at the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
