A carved sandalwood fan, China, Canton for export, 19th century Large asymmetrical fan, the sandalwood master strands carved with small figures, pavilions and trees, while the plumes are openwork. The double sheet is painted in gouache with animated scenes of figures in palaces and gardens. Parts of the figures' clothing are in silk, their faces in painted bone.
