Six-leaf screen in black lacquered wood and hardstone inlay, China, 20th century Each leaf is composed of three molded reserves: square at the bottom, rectangular in height at the center and round at the top. Each is decorated with finely carved and incised hardstone inlays featuring a variety of furniture and scholarly objects (vases of peonies, chrysanthemums or plum blossoms, incense burners, musical instruments, scrolls, seals, pendants, board games, bitongs and brushes, fruit bowls, etc.). The uprights framing the reserves are decorated with a stylized dragon chi motif and red and gold lacquered foliage and scrolls. Various flowering branches and small medallions decorated with stylized flowers and lotus blossoms in gold lacquer dot the reverse of each panel. Hinge system consisting of two metal rings and a hook, some of which are missing. Size of each leaf: H. 183 cm - W. 40.3 cm (chips and missing lacquer, scratches)
