MONTHERLANT (Henry de) - BIRR (Jacques). España sagrada. Paris: Les Bibliophiles de l'Automobile-club de France, [1967]. - In-4, leaves, filled cover, publisher's slipcase. Partly first edition, illustrated with 24 original color lithographs by painter and lithographer Jacques BIRR (1920-2012). Edition of 150 copies on Rives vellum. This is an unnumbered chapel copy, having belonged to the typographer Pierre Jean Mathan, who printed it himself. It has been enriched with a superb original watercolor by the artist, dedicated ("To Pierre Mathan, in very friendly memory of España Sagrada // whose help has been invaluable to me. // Jacques Birr // 6.1.68."), and this autograph dispatch signed by Montherlant: "To Mr. Pierre Jean Mathan // to whom we owe this fine edition which owes as much to // the printer as to the illustrator, // with thanks from // Montherlant // 21-1-1968." A very well preserved copy.
